  • Summary

Jesus announced on January 17, 29 CE that his third preaching tour would include a women’s corps. Joanna, the wife of Chuza, the steward of Herod Antipas, was one of ten women commissioned by Jesus to be evangelists of his gospel. She was selected by the others to be their treasurer.

  • The Women’s Corps

Jesus selected ten women who had helped in the administration of his prior camp and infirmary, and they were diligent and devoted to the cause. They had witnessed young evangelists being sent on missions but never dreamed of being asked themselves. Of these ten women commissioned by Jesus as evangelists, one was Joanna, whose husband was the steward of Herod Antipas. The women’s corps elected Joanna as their treasurer. They were able to do all their future service without asking the apostles for funds.

Andrew, upon instructions from Jesus, placed the management of the apostolic party’s Sabbath services in the hands of the women’s corps when they were in Tiberias. Since the women were included, that eliminated being able to use a synagogue. The women selected Joanna to oversee all the preparations, and with her connections, the meeting was held in Herod’s new palace. Herod was away at the time and they used his banquet room for the service. Joanna read from the Scriptures concerning women's work in the religious life of Israel, making reference to Miriam, Deborah, Esther, and others.

  • Resurrection Sunday

Five women, dissatisfied with the less-than-perfect embalming of the Master on Friday, vowed to return on Sunday morning to give Jesus a more proper anointing and carefully wrap him in bandages. They carried with them an abundance of special embalming lotions and many linen bandages. When Mary Magdalene peered into the tomb and saw that Jesus’ body was gone, she uttered a cry of alarm and anguish. The other four women, in terror, ran for their lives, making it all the way to the Damascus gate. Joanna stopped, conscience-stricken that they left Mary alone by the tomb, rallied her companions, and they all went back to find Mary.
