Located north of the Sea of Galilee and east of the Jordan River, Jesus visited Bethsaida-Julias during his Second Preaching Tour and later, he noted the resistance to the Gospel here relative to other cities.
Bethsaida-Julias is a city north of the Sea of Galilee, on the east side of the Jordan River which flows into the Sea. It is an ancient city, and its exact location is contested by archaeologists.
Jesus visited Bethsaida-Julias during his Second Preaching Tour, and later, he praised the cities that received the teachings positively during the return of the seventy disciples to Pella, contrasting them with those like Bethsaida-Julias where the gospel faced rejection.
Bethsaida-Julias lies a short distance to the north-east of Capernaum. Just south of Bethsaida-Julias is a resort area with a beautiful park, called Magadan Park, where Jesus and his apostles camped and rested.
There is also a fishing village, with part of the same name, called Bethsaida, on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee. It is a short distance to the south-west of Capernaum. The three cities, Bethsaida, Capernaum, and Bethsaida-Julias are practically co-linear, and around five miles from one another.
The apostles worked in Bethsaida-Julias and other cities when figuring out how to support their families before their public teaching.
Jesus visited the city of Bethsaida-Julias as part of his Second Preaching Tour from October through December of 28 CE.
During a later preaching tour, the group known as the seventy disciples returned to their camp in Pella on December 30, 29 CE. They were bubbling over, enthusiastic about their successes in various cities. Jesus responded in kind, and he praised the residents of those cities who embraced the teachings of his apostles and ministers. However, he lamented the cities like Chorazin, Bethsaida-Julias, and Capernaum, where the gospel was not well received, indicating their missed opportunity to embrace the message of the kingdom.
