Organization of the Twelve Apostles
  • Summary

In the latter half of 26 CE, Jesus and his newly formed group of apostles underwent a significant phase of intensive training and preparation, combining personal labor with spiritual instruction. Following this period, the apostles organized their roles to handle various responsibilities efficiently, with Andrew leading as the chairman, various apostles handling tasks ranging from personal companionship to Jesus, managing finances, overseeing family needs, and arranging logistics and recreation. And they did all of this while ensuring they could fully commit to their spiritual mission without financial worries for their families.

  • The Work Begins

After a period dedicated to intensive training, Jesus and his new apostles engaged in rigorous preparation, weaving personal labor with spiritual instruction. This phase, which took place in the latter half of 26 CE, not only strengthened their dedication but also brought their understanding of Jesus' teachings in line with the actual manifestation of his spiritual kingdom. They distinguished Jesus’ direct lessons from potential future misinterpretations, focusing solely on the message of the gospel rather than the glorification of Jesus himself. This foundational time was crucial, setting a precedent for their future endeavors in spreading the gospel effectively and with clarity.

By the end of this period, the twelve had devised satisfactory plans for the care of their families. The majority of the apostles were married, and some had multiple children. However, they had arranged for the support of their families in such a way that they could devote their entire energies to the Master's work with the assistance of the apostolic funds and without concern for the financial well-being of their families.

  • The Organization of the Twelve

To most effectively accomplish the multiple tasks that needed to be done, they organized themselves as follows:

    • Andrew was a natural leader of men and was designated chairman and director general.
    • Peter, James, and John were appointed personal companions of Jesus. They watched over Jesus, attended to his needs, and accompanied him whenever he went away to spend time with his Father.
    • Philip was the steward. He was responsible for meals, including those for surprise visitors or growing numbers of followers.
    • Nathaniel checked on the needs of the apostle’s families. He received regular reports of their status. If funds ran low, the apostles and Jesus returned to their livelihood. If Judas had funds available, they would be delivered.
    • Matthew served as the apostolic corps' fiscal agent. It was his responsibility to ensure budget balance and treasury replenishment. If the necessary donations to sustain the party failed to materialize, Matthew had the authority to mandate the twelve individuals to return to their respective nets for an entire season. However, this ceased to be an issue once they commenced their public service; the treasurer consistently possessed adequate funds to support their endeavors.
    • Thomas managed the itinerary: places to stay, venues for teaching and preaching, and logistics for minimal miles; a travel agent.
    • James and Judas Alpheus handled the management of the multitudes, providing security. They deputized enough assistant ushers to maintain order.
    • Simon Zelotes was given responsibility for recreation and play. He oversaw the Wednesday programs and aimed to provide a few hours of relaxation and diversion each day.
    • Judas Iscariot was appointed treasurer. He carried the available coffers, paid expenses, and kept the books. He provided Matthew with an estimated budget each week and received approval from Andrew before paying any bills.

The apostles were ordained ministers whose jobs were ambassadors of the kingdom and preachers of the word of God. They also provided the critical support listed above which underlined their success.
