Cana
  • Summary

Cana is a city in northern Israel and in the Galilee region, best known as the location of Jesus’ first miracle, when water was turned into wine at the wedding feast of Naomi. In modern times, Cana is known as Kafr Kanna.

Jesus' father, Joseph, worked as a carpenter and builder in Cana when Jesus was a young boy. Jesus would often go with his father to this city when he was a boy.

The Apostle Nathaniel was from Cana. And Cana was one of the cities that was visited during the first public preaching tour of Galilee.

  • Joseph of Nazareth Worked in Cana

When Jesus was a boy, his father, Joseph, would sometimes work in the city of Cana. Jesus would frequently accompany his father to Cana, both for his father’s business as well as pleasure trips. This was easily done, as Cana was only about 4 miles from Nazareth.

  • Cana is the Hometown of the Apostle Nathaniel

Nathaniel lived at home with his parents in Cana when he first became associated with Jesus and his mission. Cana was also included in the list of cities in the Galilee area that Jesus and the apostles visited during the first public preaching tour.

  • The Wedding at Cana

The wedding at Cana occurred shortly after Jesus returned from his forty-day journey on Mount Hermon and chose his first six apostles. The townspeople and surrounding areas had already heard about Jesus' baptism, where a spirit appeared over him and a voice proclaimed him as the beloved Son of God. At the wedding, people expected something supernatural, but Jesus didn't want attention and advised his mother and apostles not to expect any miracles yet.

Nevertheless, when his mother, Mary, appealed to Jesus to help the bridegroom’s family avoid the embarrassment of running out of wine, Jesus said he would help if it was God’s will. Shortly afterward, six large pots of water were transformed into fine wine.
