  • Jesus Meets Rome's Stoic Leader

Angamon was the leader of the Stoics in Rome. The Stoics taught that we should be willing to endure what fate has in store for us: to face life with self-control and subdue our passions, to maintain honor over life’s transient events, and to live a simple life of integrity and duty. A leading proponent was Seneca of Rome.

Days after Jesus arrived in Rome, he met Angamon, and they shared an all-night talk on topics they both loved: religion and philosophy. Jesus taught Angamon a higher standard of true values. Angamon was impressed.

Angamon introduced Jesus to a fellow Roman citizen and Stoic who was wealthy and very interested in Jesus’ teaching. Jesus had many intimate conferences with this man who was concerned about his soul, and he asked Jesus his greatest worry: What would you do if you had my wealth? Jesus explained that he would spend material wealth to enrich material life, just as he would apply knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual service to augment intellectual life, improve social life, and advance spiritual life. He would administer material wealth as a sagacious trustee of the resources of one generation towards the benefit and ennoblement of all succeeding generations.

Angamon later became good friends with the Apostle Paul and assisted him in spreading Christianity in Rome.
